Technical Assistance

I have always had a fairly easily time figuring out how to do things on a computer. I attempted to help my classmates whenever possible, whether it was responding to questions, directing to an online tutorial, advising of little known software features, or explaining controls in Second Life.

PDF Mark-up

While in IT530, a student shared that she liked to make notes directly on the assigned readings. She explained that assignments that used Word would allow her to comment directly in the document, but she had to print all of the PDF documents. I advised her that she could use PDF markup features to comment directly on the document. I shared a link for Foxit Reader, a free PDF utility which has markup features for Windows users, and provided instructions for how Mac users could do the same with the Operating System's built in Preview program.

Filezilla Tutorial Video

In IT486, I noticed that several students struggled with some of the technical aspects of the class. One specific example was regarding FTP clients. The final project was a student designed website, which needed to be uploaded to the SIUE web space via FTP. A number of students had difficulties figuring out the FTP clients. In order to help, I used screen-recording software (ScreenFlow) and quickly created a short step-by-step tutorial video on how to use Filezilla. This was not an assigned project, but I felt that my classmates would benefit.  (video link)
